My Pottermore Wrap Up
The Harry Potter series has been a major part of my life. I was only a year old when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was published, and it is one of the first books I remember reading. To this day, J.K. Rowling and the world she created are some of my biggest inspirations. When Pottermore, the official site for all things HP, was launched, I was so excited to go through the same process as the Hogwarts students—house sorting, wand shopping, and patronus conjuring. Below is a summary of my house, my wand, and my patronus.
1) My House Sorting: Ravenclaw
I am a very proud Ravenclaw, the house known for its intelligent, curious, and eccentric students. Some of the most famous Ravenclaws are my man Gilderoy Lockhart, Luna Lovegood, and Garrick Ollivander. The common room at the top of Ravenclaw Tower is known for its breathtaking view of the grounds and the enchanted knocker, which requires those seeking entry to answer a riddle. I’ve taken many sorting quizzes, and I’ve always switched back and forth from Ravenclaw to Slytherin, but given that Pottermore is the authority on sorting, and the Sorting Hat does consider a student’s preference, I can officially don some blue and bronze. I was also sorted into the Horned Serpent house of Ilvermorny, which represents the mind and favors scholars. In other words, I’m a nerd in the Harry Potter universe and this one.
2) My Wand
My wand is made of sycamore wood with a Phoenix feather core. It is 10 ¾” long with a slightly springy flexibility. According to the Pottermore site, “The sycamore makes a questing wand, eager for new experience and losing brilliance if engaged in mundane activities. It is a quirk of these handsome wands that they may combust if allowed to become ‘bored,’ . . .” A witch or wizard with a sycamore wand are known for their adventurousness and curiosity, and this type of wand is known for its ability to learn and adapt.
A Phoenix feather core is the rarest wand core, and they are known for being picky when choosing their owners, as a phoenix itself is very independent. This core gives a wand the greatest range of magical ability, but it also has a mind of its own.
3) My Patronus
My patronus is a calico cat. One of my childhood pets was a calico cat named Carmella, and she was a wonderful, crotchety little lady. She was in my family from the time I was 10 until she passed away last year. Mugglenet.com says, “Talk about a cat with “cattitude”! Every single calico cat can be widely different from the others! They are known to be the quirkiest of cats, and you can spend your whole life trying to unravel all the quirks and idiosyncrasies of these delightful felines. Dementors won’t know what to do against this wildly wonderful Patronus!”
I have always loved cats, so I was not surprised when Pottermore told me my patronus is a calico. In my opinion, cats are the perfect companion for any Ravenclaw. According to the Tumblr blog patronusappreciation, “The cat is the watchful guardian of the patronus world, and embodies the dichotomy of things, often managing to be two opposing things at once. Fickle but somehow also loyal, they tend to be quite clever and alert individuals . . .Calicos are hailed as extremely observant, lucky cats, and those with a calico may have an uncanny ability to make things happen or to affect outcomes to make them more favorable.”
