8 Book Nerd Problems
I got 99 problems, and most of them are probably book related.
1) You never have enough
There are so many books out there you haven’t read yet! Millions just sitting there, collecting, dust, beckoning for you. But I have bills to pay, you whisper. You need to buy groceries, you remind yourself. You go into that bookstore anyway. You order 10 more off of Amazon anyway, because you love books and you’re self-destructive.
2) The need to finish a book, even though its 2am
We’ve all been there. You have less than 100 pages left, and you’re soooooo tired, but you just HAVE to finish it. The plot is picking up. It’s intense. You need to know how it ends, but you also have to get up for school/work in the morning. Can you really put it down and let it go for the night? No. Exhaustion it is.
3) Those character deaths that just rip your heart out
There are just some literary deaths you never get over, especially when they are sudden and unexpected. I’m still not over Hedwig. Non-bookworms just do not understand the emotional turmoil of losing a beloved character. You have to just sit their for a while, clutching the book to your chest, and process it, just like in real life. Maybe mourning for people that don’t exist is a little crazy, but we get attached, okay?
4) Feeling your soul die a little when a book gets damaged
I’m not talking some bent pages or cracked spines. I’m talking about the water bottle in your bag that you didn’t close tightly, and now it’s leaking all over your precious book. The pages are soaked and waved. The cover is ripped. The binding is falling apart. It will never sit prettily on your shelf ever again. Tragic.
5) When you’re just trying to read and people keep talking to you
Uh, excuse me. Do you not see the book in my hands? Do you not see my eyes scanning over the pages? Do you not understand that I am giving one-word answers, because I don’t want to talk to you??? Pay attention to me! You can read later! You’re boring. This book is not. Bye.
6) Horrible, horrible movie adaptations
I’m pretty fair when it comes to movie adaptations. I’m not too picky, as long as the spirit of the story is expressed. However, we all know a book that was turned into a crap movie. They cut out important scenes, iconic characters, or change even endings (I’m looking at you, Inferno). Ask any reader, and they will tell you they would much rather have a 5 hour movie with exact detail.
7) Trying to find a comfortable reading position
You sit for a while, and then your back hurts. You change positions, and your arms get tired. You move again. Your foot falls asleep, or the lighting isn’t right, or your neck is aching. Has anyone done a scientific study on the best reading position? I need a solution here.
8) Too many emotions
Any reader will tell you that it isn’t always fun. Some books send you on an emotional rollercoaster, stress you out, and leave you exhausted. No matter how many times you get hurt, you feel empty without it, so you just keep coming back for more.
